West Africa Projects by Robert Earle
In 1997, Etruscan Resources hired Dr John Savage to develop
humanitarian projects in Niger. The Rotary Club of Dartmouth had
been searching for an International Service initiative with a
local connection to facilitate our efforts. Thus, this was the
beginning of a long and successful partnership between our Club
and Etruscan.
Dr. Savage frequently travelled to Niger to meet with village
officials in areas close to the Samira Hill mine site. After
much consultation, it was decided that a medical clinic in Toure
would be the priority.
Our Club formed a Rotary Foundation Matching Grant with the
Rotary Club of Niamey to fund many of the essential components
of this clinic. Sanitation equipment, a water tower and foot
pump, medical supplies, and a brick wall to enclose the clinic
property were all provided.

Since that time we have been continually involved in fulfilling
the needs of the clinic and the many villagers who seek basic
health care. Essential medications have been donated through
Health Partners International and transported to Toure by
Etruscan employees, Rotarians, and by air freight. Rotarians in
Niamey have facilitated the receipt of shipments and customs
clearance.

Dartmouth Rotarians have enjoyed our long-term involvement in
the health care of Toure villagers. We receive statistics from
the clinic nurse and requests when supplies are low. This link
has been sustained through our relationship with the people of
Etruscan.
Dartmouth Rotarians visited Toure in 2002 and 2006, and it has
been an unforgettable and inspirational experience to see first-
hand the results of a sincere commitment made by a small Rotary
Club.
Bossey
Bangou
The people of Etruscan have been involved mainly with
improvements in education in Bossey Bangou, and long-term
efforts have resulted in a vastly enhanced educational
experience for the children of the village. Etruscan built new
classrooms and repaired old ones, school supplies were provided,
and mothers have been encouraged to visit the school with their
daughters to improve the enrolment of girls.
